Introduction
Osaka is Japan’s food capital — and Japan’s most relaxed major city. While Tokyo is intense and Kyoto is reverent, Osaka is loud, friendly, and obsessed with eating. The local saying kuidaore — “eat until you drop” — captures the spirit.
For most travellers, Osaka is the best base for the Kansai region: cheaper hotels than Kyoto, better food than anywhere, and 15-45 minutes from Kyoto and Nara.
Top sights
Dotonbori
The neon-lit canal-side district that defines Osaka. The Glico Running Man sign, the Kani Doraku giant moving crab, food stalls everywhere.
- Best time: Evening (8:00-10:00 PM) for the lights
- Top food spots: Daruma kushikatsu, Hoshina takoyaki, Mizuno okonomiyaki
- Photo spot: Ebisu Bridge for the Glico sign
Osaka Castle
The iconic 16th-century castle, rebuilt in concrete in the 1930s. The exterior is striking, the interior is a museum (good or skippable depending on your interest).
- ¥600 admission for the keep
- Castle Park is free and lovely in cherry blossom season (early April)
- 1-2 hours total; longer in spring
Universal Studios Japan (USJ)
| Area | Highlight |
|---|---|
| Super Nintendo World | Mario Kart ride (book Express Pass) |
| The Wizarding World of Harry Potter | Forbidden Journey ride |
| Donkey Kong Country | Mine cart roller coaster |
| Jurassic Park | Flying Dinosaur (intense) |
| Hollywood | Stunt shows, Spider-Man |
- Tickets ¥8,600-¥10,400 (varies by date)
- Express Pass essential at peak times — without it, queues hit 3-4 hours
- Plan a full day; arrive at park opening
Namba
The shopping and nightlife district. Connected to Dotonbori but more daytime/shopping focused.
- Namba Walk underground mall — extensive, escape rain or heat
- Kuromon Ichiba Market — “Osaka’s kitchen”, great for street food lunch
- Den-Den Town — Osaka’s electronics/anime district (smaller Akihabara)
Umeda Sky Building
Twin-tower observation deck with a “floating garden”. Better views than Osaka Castle, ¥1,500.
Food essentials
| Dish | Where to try |

| Takoyaki (octopus balls) | Aizuya (one of the original takoyaki shops), Hoshina, Wanaka |
| Okonomiyaki (savoury pancake) | Mizuno, Chibo |
| Kushikatsu (fried skewers) | Daruma — you’ll see the angry chef logo |
| Negiyaki (green onion pancake) | Yamamoto |
| Wagyu | Yakiniku Like (chain, affordable), Kobe Plaisir (premium) |
| Ramen | Kinryu Ramen (24-hour Dotonbori chain) |

Tip: The “no double dipping” rule at kushikatsu — there’s a communal sauce vat, dip your skewer once. Use the cabbage to scoop more sauce on if needed.

Practical tips
- IC card (ICOCA or Suica) works on every Osaka train and bus
- Osaka Amazing Pass (¥2,800/¥3,600) — unlimited subway + free entry to 30+ attractions
- Walk on the right on escalators (Tokyo is left — Osaka is the only major Japanese city that does it the international way)
- Cash for street food — many takoyaki stalls don’t take cards
- No double-dipping at kushikatsu — strict rule
Cherry blossom and autumn
- Cherry blossom (sakura): late March to early April — Osaka Castle Park, Kema Sakuranomiya Park (river of cherry trees)
- Autumn leaves (kōyō): mid-November — Mt. Mino Park (45 min north of Osaka)
Summary
Osaka is the most accessible Japanese city for first-time visitors who want to eat. Combine 2-3 days here with day trips to Kyoto and Nara, and you’ve covered the best of western Japan. Cheaper, friendlier, and more energetic than Kyoto — and the perfect counterpoint to Tokyo.
