Introduction
If Tokyo represents modern Japan, Kyoto is traditional Japan. The capital for over 1,000 years (794-1868), Kyoto holds more than 2,000 temples and shrines, 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, and centuries of preserved culture in its architecture, food and crafts.
Kyoto is 15 minutes by Shinkansen from Osaka — making it the easiest day trip in the country, or a perfect 2-3 day stay.
Top sights
Fushimi Inari Taisha
The 10,000+ vermillion torii gates winding up Mt. Inari — Kyoto’s most photographed site. Free, open 24/7.
- Best time: 6:00-7:00 AM (no crowds, soft morning light)
- The full hike to the summit is 2-3 hours; turn back at the Yotsutsuji intersection if short on time
- Shrine to Inari, the kami of rice and prosperity — businesses donate gates, hence the thousands
Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion)
A Zen temple covered in gold leaf, reflected on a pond. ¥500, 9:00-17:00
- 30-45 minutes is enough — you walk a one-way path
- Combines well with Ryōan-ji (rock garden) nearby
- Best in autumn (orange-red leaves frame the gold) or winter (snow on gold)
Arashiyama (Bamboo Grove + more)
Bamboo path is iconic but short. The wider Arashiyama area has more value:
- Tenryu-ji — UNESCO Zen temple, beautiful gardens (¥500)
- Bamboo Grove — 5-minute walk, free, very crowded after 9 AM
- Iwatayama Monkey Park — wild Japanese macaques with mountain views (¥600)
- Togetsukyō Bridge — photographic, especially in autumn
- Hozugawa river cruise — 2-hour scenic boat ride (¥4,500)
Gion
The historic geisha district. Traditional wooden machiya houses, lantern-lit at night. Look for maiko (apprentice geisha) in the early evening — but don’t chase or photograph them aggressively (the city has fines now for harassment).
- Hanami-koji street is the best preserved
- Nearby: Yasaka Shrine (free, especially atmospheric in evening)
Kiyomizu-dera
Wooden temple on a cliff with sweeping views over Kyoto. ¥500, 6:00-18:00
- Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka — preserved historical streets leading up to the temple
- Crowded by mid-morning; sunrise is dramatic
Less crowded alternatives
| If you want | Try this instead |
|---|---|
| Bamboo grove without crowds | Kōdai-ji bamboo path (Higashiyama) |
| Zen rock garden | Daitoku-ji subtemples (Daisen-in, Ryogen-in) |
| Golden pavilion | Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion) — quieter |
| Geisha district | Pontochō (smaller than Gion) |

| Higashiyama | Ryokan experience, walking to major temples |
| Karasuma / Shijō | Modern shopping, central location |

Kyoto as a day trip from Osaka
A practical 1-day plan from Osaka:
| Time | Activity |
|---|---|
| 7:00 | Train Osaka → Kyoto (45 min, ¥580 JR) |
| 8:00 | Fushimi Inari (1.5h) |
| 10:00 | Kiyomizu-dera (1h, including Sannenzaka walk) |
| 12:00 | Lunch in Higashiyama |
| 13:30 | Gion district + Yasaka Shrine |
| 15:00 | Shinkansen / JR to Arashiyama (15 min) |
| 16:00 | Arashiyama Bamboo + Tenryu-ji (1.5h) |
| 18:00 | Train back to Osaka |
This is intense — 2 days lets you slow down dramatically.
Food in Kyoto
Kyoto cuisine emphasises seasonal vegetables, tofu, and refined presentation:
- Yudofu — boiled tofu, a Kyoto specialty (try at Nanzen-ji area)
- Kaiseki — multi-course haute cuisine, plan ¥10,000-¥30,000 per person
- Matcha sweets — Tsujiri, Nakamura Tōkichi (Uji is the matcha capital nearby)
- Nishiki Market — “Kyoto’s kitchen”, street-food walking lunch
- Soba and udon — refined versions throughout
Practical tips
- Buy a Kyoto City Bus 1-day pass (¥700) — buses cover sights better than trains within Kyoto
- Avoid Sunday mornings at popular temples — locals visit then
- Cherry blossom season (early April) doubles all hotel prices and crowds
- Autumn (mid-November) is even more crowded than spring — book months ahead
- Dress modestly at temples — shoulders covered, no loud behaviour
