JR Pass 2026: Prices, Where to Buy, When It's Worth It
Introduction
The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) is an unlimited rail pass for most JR trains in Japan — including the Shinkansen (bullet train). Buy once, ride for 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days.
Important: In October 2023, the price went up by about 70%. The Pass is no longer the automatic choice it once was — calculate before buying.

Calculator: is JR Pass worth it for my trip?
Example 1: Tokyo ↔ Osaka/Kyoto (7 days)
| Trip | Without JR Pass | With JR Pass |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo → Osaka (Hikari) | ¥13,870 | ¥0 |
| Osaka → Kyoto | ¥580 | ¥0 |
| Kyoto → Tokyo (Hikari) | ¥13,710 | ¥0 |
| Tokyo subway use (3 days) | ~¥2,000 | ¥0 (some lines) |
| Total | ¥30,160 | ¥50,000 (Pass) |
Verdict: ❌ JR Pass is not worth it for this itinerary alone. Buy individual tickets.
Example 2: Tokyo + Kyoto + Hiroshima (7 days)
| Trip | Without JR Pass | With JR Pass |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo → Kyoto (Hikari) | ¥13,710 | ¥0 |
| Kyoto → Hiroshima (Hikari) | ¥11,420 | ¥0 |

In Japan (since 2023)
You can now buy the Pass at JR ticket offices in Japan, but it costs about 5% more. Stick to online purchase unless you decide spontaneously.
How to use the Pass
- Land in Japan, go to a JR Travel Service Center
- Show your passport + voucher (with “Temporary Visitor” stamp from immigration)
- Choose your activation date (within 30 days of issue)
- Receive the physical pass — keep it safe, replacements aren’t free
- Use it by showing the pass at manned ticket gates (or scanning at IC-compatible gates)
- Reserve Shinkansen seats free at any JR ticket office
Tips
- Reserve Shinkansen seats during peak season (cherry blossom, Golden Week, Obon, New Year) — non-reserved cars fill up fast
- Don’t lose the pass — replacements cost the full price again
- Children ride free if under 6 (max 2 per paying adult)
- The pass starts on the day you choose, not the day you exchange the voucher
